How Far Does My Pizza Oven Have to Be from My Neighbours?

Home / Wood Fired Pizza / How Far Does My Pizza Oven Have to Be from My Neighbours?

Planning to install a pizza oven at home?

No matter if your home is in the suburbs or a more rural area, it’s essential to understand how much clearance your pizza oven needs from fences, walls, and neighbouring properties, particularly when working with wood, fire, and smoke.

This quick guide covers the key safety clearances, council considerations, and tips to help you install your oven with confidence (and without complaints).

Is There a Legal Distance Requirement?

There’s no single rule for how far your pizza oven must be from a boundary. However, several factors influence placement:

  • Fire safety regulations
  • Flue clearance from combustible materials
  • Local council or strata guidelines
  • Smoke nuisance laws

To avoid future issues, always check your local council’s position. Most treat pizza ovens like barbecues or firepits (especially if they’re not enclosed or plumbed into utilities).

Use This Rule of Thumb for Placement

As a general guide, aim for:

  • No overhanging eaves, trees, or pergolas above or around the oven
  • Not flush against a shared wall or combustible structure

If space is tight, consider one of our compact JA60 Pizza Ovens or benchtop pizza oven models that suit smaller outdoor areas.

Safe Clearance Around Your Pizza Oven

To ensure safe operation and airflow, maintain these minimum clearances:

  • 50mm from the back and sides of the oven dome
  • 400mm above the dome
  • 700mm from the front of the oven

These clearances are essential when installing near timber posts, walls, or pergola framing (especially if made from combustible materials).

Flue Clearance Requirements (Very Important)

Smoke complaints and heat damage usually stem from poorly installed flues. Here’s what you need to know:

Minimum Flue Clearances:

  • 750mm clearance from all sides of a single skin flue
  • 75mm for a double skin flue
  • 25mm for a triple skin flue
  • 750mm clearance radius above the flue (no overhangs or structures)

If you’re installing your oven under a roof, it must be a non-combustible material like tin to use a single skin flue. For timber or composite ceilings, use a double or triple skin flue kit to pass safely through the cavity.

Final Safety Tip

Always consult a licensed plumber or installer when setting up your pizza oven, especially if you’re building into a structure or connecting gas.

They’ll ensure your oven complies with fire safety and flue regulations, and help prevent issues down the track.
