When Michael Pope was building his new home, he already knew that good food and entertaining would be a big part of life there. A wood fired pizza oven seemed like the perfect addition — and from the beginning, Michael and his family made sure it was incorporated into the plans for the backyard.
Michael chose a Jalando JA70 Tiled Black Pizza Oven, creating a dedicated cooking and entertaining area that has quickly become a favourite spot for family and friends.
Rather than adding the pizza oven as an afterthought, Michael had a specific location included in the house plans from the very start.
The position was carefully considered so that smoke wouldn’t drift back towards the house, while still allowing the family to keep an eye on the oven while cooking.
They also designed the concrete pad with flexibility in mind. The oven sits on wheels, allowing it to be swivelled around if required — a practical detail that gives Michael plenty of options for using the space.
There was also a little extra planning involved when it came time to get the oven into the backyard. The timing had to be just right so the oven could be moved into position at a particular stage of the house build.
So far, Michael has kept things relatively simple, cooking plenty of pizzas and even experimenting with dessert pizzas.
But it was a birthday celebration that really showed just how much fun a pizza oven can bring to an occasion.
For his birthday, Michael hosted a party and cooked around 12 pizzas for his guests. Rather than doing all the cooking himself, everyone got involved — making pizzas, cooking them and, of course, eating them!
“It was a big hit,” says Michael.
The pizza oven quickly became more than just a cooking appliance. It became part of the entertainment, bringing everyone together and creating an experience that guests could be involved in.
Michael also lives next door to his brother, making the pizza oven an ideal addition for family gatherings and entertaining close to home.
With a love of good food and spending time with family and friends, the JA70 has become a natural centrepiece for outdoor entertaining.

“Thanks for all the advice, and help with getting the pizza oven into place which was tricky and the timing had to be just right so we could get it into the backyard at a certain stage of the build.”
