Protecting Your Refractory Rendered Pizza Oven from the Weather

Home / Wood Fired Pizza / Protecting Your Refractory Rendered Pizza Oven from the Weather

Your refractory rendered pizza oven is designed to handle heat but what about harsh weather? Not so much.

Rain, moisture, and UV exposure can wear down the exterior over time, especially if left unprotected. Fortunately, it only takes a few simple steps to protect your oven and keep it performing at its best year after year.

Why Weather Protection Matters

Rendered ovens (like our JA70 Rendered Pizza Ovens and JA90 Rendered Pizza Ovens) are made from high-quality refractory materials. They hold heat beautifully — but the rendered surface can absorb moisture if not cared for properly.

Without protection, you’ll risk:

  • Large cracks (hairline crack are normal)
  • Discolouration
  • Gradual wear and water damage

3 Simple Steps to Weatherproof Your Oven

Step 1: Keep It Under Cover (If You Can)

The best weather protection is a roof.
If your oven is under a pergola, patio, or other covered area, it’s already shielded from direct sun and rain — a massive win for longevity.

Step 2: Use a Fitted Pizza Oven Cover

Don’t skip the cover — even if your oven is undercover.
A proper pizza oven cover adds another layer of defence, blocking dust, UV rays, moisture and debris.

Look for:

  • UV-resistant, waterproof material
  • Snug fit (no flapping or pooling)
  • Breathability to prevent trapped moisture

Step 3: Seal It Once a Year

A yearly seal keeps your oven watertight.
We recommend using Bondall Boncrete (1 part Boncrete to 4 parts water) once annually. Apply it to a clean, dry surface on the outside of your oven with a soft brush or roller. This is for rendered ovens only. Let it cure fully before your next cook.

This prevents:

  • Water absorption
  • Freeze/thaw cracking
  • Surface crumbling or softening

Want a Lower Maintenance Finish?

If you’d prefer something even more durable, our JA70 Tiled Pizza Ovens and JA Grande Tiled Pizza Ovens offer extra weather protection without the need for sealing. Tiles also help prevent hairline cracks in render and reduce long-term upkeep.

Protect your investment, and your oven will pay you back in years of perfect pizza nights.
