Firing Up Community Spirit at Newbury Primary School with a JA90 Dome Tiled Pizza Oven

At Newbury Primary School, the smell of wood-fired pizza is bringing the community together in a whole new way. Earlier this year, the school installed a JA90 Dome Tiled Pizza Oven as part of an initiative to create fun, hands-on experiences for staff, students, and families.

“We wanted to create a fun, hands-on way to bring our school community together, and a pizza oven felt like the perfect solution,” says Karl Bugeja from Newbury Primary School.

Since its installation, the oven has already been a hit. The school has hosted staff pizza-making events, and plans are underway to expand this to family nights and student-led activities during school terms. The excitement has spread beyond the staffroom too. Parents walking past at pick-up and drop-off have been curious about how they can get involved.

The interactive nature of pizza-making has been a big drawcard. Students are taking part in rolling dough, preparing toppings, and learning about food hygiene and teamwork. Staff have embraced the cooking side, making it a shared experience that connects people across all levels of the school community.

“The response has been fantastic. Teachers love getting involved in the pizza-making process, and parents have been curious on how to get involved,” Karl explains.

So far, pizzas have been the main feature, but the school has plenty of ideas for future experiments, including baked potatoes and other oven-friendly dishes.

To keep things running smoothly, the school uses a full set of accessories—from brushes for cleaning the oven floor to pizza peels and digital thermometers for temperature control. “The brush, peel, and temperature tools have made it much easier to operate safely and efficiently. Keeping the oven clean is a breeze with the right tools,” Karl adds.

Cooking with wood has also been an educational experience. The school sources its wood locally from Bunnings, and the students are fascinated by the flames and the process of achieving the perfect heat. “It’s definitely an art! The kids love seeing the flames, and it sparks lots of great conversations about heat, fire safety, and cooking methods,” says Karl.

With careful preheating, colour cues from the dome, and the help of a laser thermometer, the school has quickly mastered the art of wood-fired cooking. The JA90 Dome Tiled Pizza Oven is proving to be more than just a cooking tool—it’s become a catalyst for community, learning, and fun at Newbury Primary School.
