For Ian Robinson, building his own pizza oven wasn’t just about creating a place to cook — it was about building something meaningful with his own hands and sharing it with family.
Ian recently took on the project of assembling one of our JA100 Dome DIY Pizza Oven Kits, and the result is nothing short of impressive. With a bit of help from his granddaughter’s partner, John, Ian brought the oven to life, creating a setup that looks both functional and beautifully crafted.
The build itself is a great example of what can be achieved with a DIY approach. Ian constructed his own bench-top using interlocking blocks for the sides, paired with retaining wall sleepers to form a sturdy and practical surface. This solid foundation not only supports the oven but adds a custom, personal touch to the overall design.
After completing the structure, Ian carefully cured the oven — an essential step to ensure long-term performance. From there, he moved on to the finishing touches, painting the render and tiling around the oven and bench-top. These final details really brought the whole space together, transforming it into a polished outdoor cooking area he can be proud of.
Now comes the best part. With the oven complete, Ian is firing it up and enjoying wood-fired pizza nights with family and friends — exactly what these ovens are all about. It’s more than just cooking; it’s about creating a space that brings people together.
